Raw milk debate

By Sally Jones on November 27, 2007

Sunday Age (25/11/07) wrote a well balanced article regarding the sale of raw milk.My Pop’s generation that was born about 1920 never heard of pasteurization. They were never warned about the dangers of drinking milk straight from the cow.If we (Aphrodite Dairy) dare to sell raw milk for human consumption we will be branded as criminal’s and fined $44,000.Where has freedom of choice gone? We have the choice to buy raw meat from the butcher shop and have the choice to cook it or eat it raw, we have the choice of eating raw fish in our sushi roll, we can even legally buy cigarettes, branded “smoking kills” -It doesn’t make sense?’people don’t have the choice to consume raw milk! Are we going to stand up and allow a few ill-informed people in government make our decisions for us?We have the freedom of choice in this country. - I say “yes” to raw milk.

  1. Yes me too! Does anyone know what would be a good thing to do to fight for this right in Australia?

  2. Check out this great 10 minute video on bacteria in milk.. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/1/1/does-tainted-milk-cause-crohn-s-disease.aspx

  3. I grew up on Raw Milk and had no digestive problems but 40 yrs of living in the city and using pasteurized products has seen many occur. Since stopping dairy products, which I love, my digestion has improved dramatically. I realise to continue to enjoy whatever time I have left on this mortal coil I need to find a Raw Milk supplier in Melbourne. I can make my own cheeses and yoghurt if I can get real cream, butter etc. as I have the time now I am semi retired and there are ample books to help create my needs..I just need the real product to do so. Can you help and please put me on any list or petition to the authorities that will overturn the draconian legislation and offensive of freedom of choice the current situation enforces on us.
    Best wishes in your endeavours

  4. I am so happy today as I found a place to sell me raw milk every Tuesday.I also saw the U-Tube discussion that Katrina suggested should be watched and it was the most straight forward piece of commonsense on this issue that somehow needs to get out to the general and too often apathetic public. I will be retiring in 12 months and I now know that I must become engaged at the public level of overturning the iniquitious laws that govern our right to choose the way we live and eat. I believe deeply in setting laws to protect society in general but when I see what is an abuse of that system, whether deliberately by big Agribusiness or inept or even worse, corrupt officials, then I am compelled to act. I would be interested to know if there are any lobby groups out there already addressing this issue and if not is there people who will give time and money to start lobbying and creating a groundswell of outrage at the minipulation and bogus science that has operated in this area for far too long. Knowing the public service from my unfortunate years of having to deal with various bureaucracies, including one of the worst, The Health Department, I have been aware, for a very long time, of their genius for avoiding work or taking on anything remotely positive such as regular inspections of Dairies so that Organic herding and milking would be possible. It will be a long and arduous confrontation with them, The big boys in the Industry and the too often venal and ill informed Politicians surrounding these kinds of issues. But it must be done if we are to have a better dietary future for our families and loved ones.

Register and contact her through the site to offer your support. She’d be chuffed.

  6. Ken, are you in Sydney? If so, where do you plan to sell your raw milk and is it cows or goats and are you organic and at what price are you seeling your milk??

  7. Thanks Katrina - I now show this video to clients while I make up their herbal formulas and many thanks to Sally Jones for the wonderful Aphrodite Bath Milk which I reccomend to everyone and is thankfully easily available through local markets in Bondi Junction (thanks also to Pete Melov). It has now reached the stage where I need to pre order my raw milk through either the markets or local health food store which stocks Cleopatras Bath Milk from Qld otherwise they sell out and I miss out on my weeks supply (which does not make for a happy household when the chief cook and nourisher is not nourished herself!!)
Warm regards and nourishing thoughts, foods and actions

  8. I live in Sydney area. Could anyone please tell me if and where i can get raw milk and raw dairy products, PLEASE

  9. I have registered on the real milk australia site to lodge my support for raw milk in australia. I would recomend a book by Paul Chek (he writes on fitness and health), he has a lot about milk in it if you are curious about food processing (and healthy eating in general).

What I would really like would be for all packaging on aphrodite products to have a place that we can lodge our support for raw milk (whether it is real milk aus or they form their own). If people knew that there was a movement to join people might be more inclined to register. I looked for a place to lodge support, if I didn’t look I would never have found it. Shove it under our noses please so the list of supporters grows fast.

While of course aphrodite does not sell milk to drink, it is ideally pleaced to argue for the choice regardless of the risk (which is arguable anyway). Hopefully aphrodite can find a way to get it past the legal team because if there is not public support there will be no change to the laws.

For those feeling a little more active I would even recommend that you write to your local independent supermarket and ask them to stock raw milk. I noticed there is an IGA that stocks it, if the local supermarket stocks it then laws are more likely to change. While we have to hunt high and low for stockists it remains very low key.

    Cheers,
    Luke

GOOD NEWS (? maybe ?): The Food Standards Authority is conducting a review of raw milk products. They seem to be evaluating whether protocols for safe production are possible and can be incorporated into our code - a very good thing.

This link tells you all about their Raw Milk Products Project. It even includes the name and contact details of a food safety scientist involved, who you can contact to receive updates on progress: http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/newsroom/factsheets/factsheets2008/rawmilkproductscurre3959.cfm

I suggest sending ENCOURAGING words (not aggro ones!), expressing thanks, support and enthusiasm - so that they feel good about their role in (hopefully) getting this ancient, natural, health-promoting product back on people’s tables and returning this fundamenal right to consumers.
